Sweetwilliam Farm's farming operation is expanding for the2008 season.  We are adding a green house!  Plus we have expanded our produce selection as well as taking on CSA members.

Think Green, Buy Local: Local food production eliminates the environmental damage that is caused by the long-distance transportation that underlies our modern agricultural system. For consumers, the choice to spend money on locally produced foods creates an economic incentive to farmers and landowners to keep land in agricultural production, and thereby preserve open space. Researchers have found that fresh produce is more nutritious than that which has been harvested weeks or months prior to eating.

Q&A about a CSA:

What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (also called CSA or Subscription Vegetable Farming) is an innovative approach to the relationship between farmers and those who enjoy good food. With a preseason payment, members purchase a "share" of the season's harvest, a diverse assortment of seasonal vegetables each week. “Shares” enable farms to plant, grow and harvest crops as a business.  Eat local to preserve the environment and support sustainable farmland stewardship in your region. Teach children where their food comes from. Eat healthy with fresh vegetables grown by organic practices and principles. This CSA is located at Sweetwilliam Farm, Upton, MA.

What do I get for my share? Members of the farm are called shareholders, and usually receive from 8 to 15 vegetable items a week throughout the 22-week growing season. Once a week May through October, you will receive produce grown on our farm. These are pre-set pick up days. Produce will vary weekly pending on the season.  We usually start out with lettuce and greens, move into beans, squash tomatoes then into eggplant, beats and potatoes.

Is the produce certified organic? Our fields are in transition so our soil hasn’t been certified as organic.  We do follow organic policy and procedure.

Do I need to work on the farm? This year we aren’t asking people to contribute hours working in the fields.  Volunteers are always welcome.

How much does a share cost?  A full share feeds a family of 4 and is $500.00 for the season.  A half share feeds two and is $300.00 for the season.
